Vegetable-tanned leather is a natural, durable material that ages beautifully. With the right care, your item will develop a rich patina and last for many years.
1. Understanding veg-tan leather
Veg-tan leather has no synthetic coating, which means:
- It will darken over time, especially with sunlight and handling
- It absorbs oils, moisture and marks more easily
- Each piece develops a unique character
This is part of its charm, not a flaw.
2. Daily care
- Keep it dry: avoid prolonged exposure to water
- Wipe gently: use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or dirt
- Handle with clean hands: oils and dirt can stain the surface
3. Conditioning
- Apply a natural leather conditioner or balm every 3–6 months
- Use a small amount and rub in with a soft cloth
- Allow it to absorb fully before use
Avoid over-conditioning; it can darken the leather more than expected.
4. If it gets wet
- Blot gently with a dry cloth (don’t rub)
- Let it air dry naturally
- Keep away from radiators, hairdryers or direct heat
- Once dry, apply a light conditioner if needed
Water may leave marks, but these often blend into the patina over time.
5. Avoiding damage
- Don’t use harsh chemicals or household cleaners
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight (it can cause uneven fading)
- Keep away from oils, grease and ink
6. Storage
- Store in a cool, dry place
- Avoid plastic bags; use breathable materials like cotton
- Keep its shape with tissue or stuffing if needed
7. Scratches and marks
Minor scratches are normal. Gently rub with a clean finger or cloth; the natural oils can reduce their appearance, and over time marks blend into the patina.
8. Patina: the beauty of age
Your leather will darken with sunlight and use, develop marks and tonal variation, and become softer and richer over time. That’s what makes veg-tan leather special and uniquely yours.
